Here we'll see how to obtain really stylish patterns that allow us to create cool backgrounds and effects.
One of the most popular usages of patters is as page background: effectively using a pattern as background let us create a super-fast loading page as the image to load is really really small and is replicated for the entire background.
This tutorial will cover several patterns so we start with the basics and then show all the examples.
To create a pattern you need to:
Crete a new document of a certain small size, we'll start with 1 x 3 pixels for the first examples.
These documents must have a transparent background.
Zoom in up to 1600% (maximum allowed) and pick the Pencil Tool, then select black as foreground color.
A few lines below you will find examples: once you have drawn your patter hit Edit > Define Pattern, then enter a name for the pattern end press OK. Now your pattern has been saved to your patterns palette; if you want to fill a layer with a pattern you simply have to hit Edit > Fill then choose Pattern in the Use Drop Down Menu and select the desired pattern in the Custom Pattern Box
Then hit OK
Draw the patterns on the left to obtain the results on the right:

These are only a few samples of pattern usage, designing random patterns and filling spaces with them can generate pleasant unexpected effects as often, while preparing a pattern, it's not easy to imagine how it will look like once it's really used.
